My Unforgettable Journey at the 2023 Formula 1 United States Grand Prix and Formula 1 Academy Race 7
When I received the invitation from the F1 in Schools North America Team to photograph the 2023 Formula 1 United States Grand Prix Event, it felt like the opportunity of a lifetime. I had little experience photographing cars let alone F1 cars! However, a month prior to the event, I bought myself the necessary gear (AKA 100-400mm lens), saw a bunch of motorsport photography tutorials, and got to work practicing.
Race weekend approached sooner than I thought. As I stood amidst the exhilarating atmosphere of the ginormous Circuit of The Americas, memories of my humble beginnings in Italy flooded back. From learning manual mode and different shutter speeds to devouring photography tutorials, every endeavor shaped me into the photographer I am today.
That weekend was one of the hottest 100 degree weather days Austin had seen that month, but I was determined to stand on the track side to capture the cars zooming by. Later on the weekend, as I made my way into the paddock area to test my luck and find a driver roaming by, I came across Maite Cáceres, an Uruguayan Driver for Campos Racing, now driver for Inter MS at the F4 US Championship 2024. I had been following up with her journey to F1 Academy so when I saw her I excitedly shouted her name and was surprised by her graciousness and generosity. Meeting her marked my weekend as she graciously invited me into her box. Her passion resonated deeply with me, especially as a fellow Latina woman in sports. Her openness served as a reminder of the power of representation and the importance of embracing and chasing your dreams.
Capturing the essence of Formula 1 wasn't just about snapping photos—it was about capturing the spirit of resilience, determination, and unwavering passion. It required not only skills, but spirit to stand along the track and to determinedly take action photos of the drivers as they fight for a pole position. Reflecting on this incredible experience, I'm filled with gratitude for the journey that led me here. This experience only left me wanting more, and as the season ended I quickly worked on getting into the motorsports world and network to pursue future opportunities. I know that each effort will be a stepping stone towards realizing my dreams.
I extend my deepest thanks to the F1 in Schools North America Team for this invaluable opportunity, and to Maite Cáceres for her generosity and inspiration. As I continue to chase my dreams through the lens, I'm reminded that the most extraordinary moments often arise from the humblest beginnings.
